Triumph
A phoenix textile sculpture
The fiery phoenix is an ancient symbol of rebirth and renewal. According to legend, this mythical bird lives for 100 years before dying in a burst of flames, only to rise again from the embers.
It's 28" tall x 24" wide x 20" deep, and is made of cotton batik fabrics, wire, feathers, Poly-fil stuffing, artificial flowers, Swarovski crystals, lace, buttons, paint, polymer clay, and other assorted trims and mixed media. Techniques include hand and machine quilting and embroidery and wire sculpting.
I enjoy creating birds from fabric and mixed media, but I'm never quite sure how they'll turn out. As I test and reject various embellishments, the bird's personality emerges. The final product is often as much a surprise to me as it is to the viewer.
